A Guide to Botanical Ingredients

Every botanical ingredient carries information — a kind of biological intelligence developed over millennia. When we apply a plant-derived oil to the skin, we participate in a conversation that predates language.

Essential oils vs carrier oils

Essential oils are concentrated aromatic compounds — potent and never applied undiluted. Carrier oils like jojoba and sweet almond dilute essential oils and carry them into the skin. The essential oil provides the signal. The carrier provides the vehicle.

Understanding scent notes

Top notes are bright and fleeting — bergamot, lemon. Heart notes are the emotional centre — lavender, ylang ylang. Base notes are deep and long-lasting — cedarwood, frankincense. A quality blend includes all three.

Sourcing matters

Lavender from Provence is chemically distinct from lavender grown elsewhere. Frankincense from Oman carries different compounds than other origins. We source each ingredient from where its therapeutic profile is strongest.
