Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of aromatic plant compounds to support physical and emotional wellbeing. It works because the body was designed to respond to plants. We evolved together.
The olfactory pathway
When you inhale an essential oil, odour molecules bind to receptors in the nasal cavity. These receptors send electrical signals directly to the olfactory bulb, which connects to the limbic system. This pathway is direct — scent arrives before thought.
Why certain scents calm us
Linalool, found in lavender, reduces anxiety by modulating GABA receptors — the same pathway targeted by pharmaceutical anxiolytics. Limonene, in citrus oils, upregulates serotonin. These are biochemistry, not placebo.
Aromatherapy as daily practice
The most effective use is daily ritual. When the body encounters the same scent repeatedly in a context of rest, it begins to associate that scent with safety. The scent becomes the shortcut.
